Ophthalmology Procedures & Diagnostics
Overview of Ophthalmology
▲Ophthalmology is the medical and surgical specialty dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases and vision disorders. Ophthalmologists manage everything from routine vision correction to sight-threatening emergencies, using a combination of clinical examination, imaging, and increasingly precise surgical techniques.
Cataract Surgery (Phacoemulsification)
▼One of the most commonly performed surgeries worldwide, involving removal of the eye's clouded natural lens and replacement with an artificial intraocular lens, typically done under local anaesthesia as a day procedure.
LASIK and Refractive Surgery
▼A widely sought procedure that reshapes the cornea using a laser to correct short-sightedness, long-sightedness, or astigmatism, reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses.
Laser Trabeculoplasty
▼A common procedure used to treat glaucoma by improving drainage of fluid from the eye, helping to lower elevated eye pressure and reduce the risk of optic nerve damage.
Intravitreal Injections
▼A frequently performed treatment for conditions such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, in which medication is injected directly into the eye to reduce abnormal blood vessel growth or swelling.
Vitrectomy
▼A more specialised surgical procedure to remove the gel-like vitreous humour from the eye, used to treat retinal detachment, severe vitreous haemorrhage, or complex diabetic eye disease.
Corneal Transplant (Keratoplasty)
▼A less common, specialised procedure in which damaged or diseased corneal tissue is replaced with healthy donor tissue, performed to restore vision in cases of severe corneal scarring, thinning, or disease.
