Gynaecology Procedures & Diagnostics

Overview of Gynaecology

Gynaecology is the medical and surgical specialty focused on the health of the female reproductive system. Gynaecologists provide preventive care, manage menstrual and hormonal conditions, and perform surgical procedures ranging from routine diagnostic tests to complex reconstructive operations.

Pap Smear and Colposcopy

A routine screening test that collects cells from the cervix to detect abnormal changes that may indicate a risk of cervical cancer, with colposcopy used to examine the cervix more closely if results are abnormal.

Dilation and Curettage (D&C)

A common procedure involving gentle widening of the cervix and removal of tissue from the uterine lining, used to diagnose abnormal bleeding or to manage certain pregnancy-related conditions.

Ovarian Cyst Removal

A frequently performed procedure to remove fluid-filled sacs that develop on or within an ovary, typically done laparoscopically when a cyst is large, persistent, or causing symptoms.

Myomectomy

A surgical procedure to remove uterine fibroids while preserving the uterus, commonly chosen by women who wish to retain fertility, performed via laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, or open surgery depending on fibroid size and location.

Hysterectomy

The surgical removal of the uterus, performed to treat conditions such as fibroids, endometriosis, abnormal bleeding, or cancer, using abdominal, vaginal, or laparoscopic approaches depending on the indication.

Pelvic Organ Prolapse Repair

A specialised reconstructive procedure to correct prolapse of the uterus, bladder, or rectum into the vaginal canal, often involving reinforcement of the pelvic floor tissues to restore normal support.

Radical Trachelectomy

A rare, highly specialised fertility-preserving surgery for early-stage cervical cancer, in which the cervix and surrounding tissue are removed while leaving the uterus intact, allowing some women to retain the possibility of future pregnancy.
